Day 2: favorite animal

For the record, Garfield is NOT my favorite animal.

How Marilyn Monroe inspired goth makeup

And now for the celebrity gossip portion of my blog.

I got sucked into looking at pictures of Siouxie Sioux, mother of the goth movement, and she reminded me of Dr. Frank N Furter, who in turn always reminds me of Marilyn Monroe. All three of them do this weird lazy eye thing, but Siouxie Sioux takes it to a new, derpier level. And this is how I determined that Marilyn Monroe is the true ancestor for all the fantastic goth makeup we know and love today.

Howzes and other doodles

Hey! I've compiled some evidence to demonstrate that my life hasn't entirely been an artistic desert (no one said it had to be compelling evidence).

If you're at all perplexed by the stunning, instagram-esque quality of the images, it's because I uploaded them with my scanner that looks and works sneakingly like a camera. Here's an... honest rendition of my dad.

I visited one of my old roommates, and drew her nose and her cat, Donut, who is almost perfectly spherical.

Lately whenever I go on a run I bring along my sketchbook so I can practice drawing houses. This doodle isn't much, but I liked the note I wrote: Flamboleo and Brulee-et. A forbidden love between disparate food stuffs, very reminiscent of "The Ballad of Poisonberry Pete."

I don't know why, but my scanner kept picking up traces of thumbs in my images.

Mr Beetle, just checking out the real estate.

Whoever's thumb this is really needs to start washing under the nail.

Because combover pompadour... things... look good on anyone, especially monkeys.

Me, pretending that I'm doing the 30 day drawing challenge.

Durhur, I swear I'm doing more than copying movies. I'm illustrating a book, and I'll have work for that up soon.

Clementine from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Like, look at those complementary colors. It's understated but really nice. I keep doing studies from films with the word "sunshine". Took too long, probably 5 hours. Now that I know I can copy, I need to start doing more than that.

                                                                                    Shit-canned design idea for a band-tee.

perspective final

This was what I finally ended up turning in for my last class. The assignment was to revamp the trojan horse story, so I just used to well known enemies: colonists and natives. And come on, totem poles are frickin' cool. Just reading about them was fun. Apparently, being on the bottom of the totem pole does not imply a lower rank. Another thing we got wrong.

Yaaaayyyy, speed paintings that aren't really that fast...

Painting of a screenshot from Little Miss Sunshine. I've been doing a lot of studies, and sketching cubes. So many cubes.

edit: I'm dumb, I uploaded a wip instead of the um, less unfinished study. Whoops. Noticed that I gave every other character more attention except for the little girl character. For shame.

Room study

Fortunately for me the light in the south east corner of my room is fairly constant, good for extended studies. Took about 4 hours, I wager.

Simple still 1

So some bros from Ringling and I decided to make like Pixar and start observing still-life Friday. So far, it means one of us tries to take a decent photo and everyone paints from it, each interpreting it differently. Gave myself an hour, and I tried to focus on shapes and values.

Doing this was very relaxing. I had been stressing over my perspective assignments, and it felt good just to paint some vegetables (I've been wanting to do still lives for months).
